«Imagine a picture of your twelve best friends having a last supper together, sitting at a wooden table eating your favorite dish. Imagine all your friends and acquaintances gathered together in a forest cabin chatting about you. How would you like that? They might suddenly decide to play some Thugger tunes at full blast for you. And what do you think of the Prosecco they’re drinking?»
Oliver Roth is staging the funeral of his mother after 10 years again. Casually and radically he’s reminiscing, is catching up on his grief from back then and is telling what happened while his mother was dead. With tough honesty he’s speaking about common visits at the doctor, the certainty of an early death and truisms. While the audience is witnessing a grieving man, it finds itself confronted with death. The conventions of funerals are being fundamentally questioned without neglecting them, with an ultra-personal approach mourning rituals are being examined concerning their unwritten rules. How is my own death like and what can I say about it – really say? WHILE YOU WERE DEAD is an open, clear and natural analysis of death, which is asking were dead is pushed to in the western society. Oliver Roth is performing honesty and kitsch. In an intimate setting he’s confronting the audience with themselves and with the unavoidable dying. Unexcitedly he’s outlining death as the most normal thing in life and is giving back hope to the audience concerning their own mortality.
